Start here — before replacing any parts
A flashing red indicator is not a unique error code. Distinguish steady red from flashing red, then read the actual printer status.
Confirm the XP-420B hardware interface and the paper/sensor type in your printer.
Manual scope: Check status; multiple meanings for red blink
Do these checks in order
Follow the steps below and keep a record of what changes after each one. Stop when an actual cause is confirmed.
Observe the lamp without pressing any buttons: BLUE steady is normal standby; RED steady can mean an open printhead or cutter issue; RED flashing can indicate paper out, jam or memory-related printing error.
With the printer turned off, check that a roll is loaded, the printhead cover latches correctly, and no labels are caught in the path.
If media is correct and the error remains, connect Diagnostic Tool through the interface your machine actually has; read its printer-status message before making further changes.
For a media error, choose the correct Gap/Black Mark sensor type, run Calibrate Sensor, and try one simple test print.
If the problem is gone
Indicator returns to steady BLUE and a test label advances correctly: the indicated media/cover issue has cleared.
If the problem is still there
Flashing RED continues with good media and correct calibration: record the exact Diagnostic Tool status and firmware edition for diagnosis, not “replace the motherboard.”
Which cause matches your result?
Use these more specific checks only when the earlier steps point to that possibility.
01The red light does not identify the failure by itself
Check whether the light is steady or flashing and read the exact Diagnostic Tool message.
Follow the indicated paper, cover or storage diagnostic instead of replacing parts based only on LED color.
02A media-related fault is reported
If the message says Paper End or Paper Jam, check the label roll and paper path.
Load the media correctly and calibrate for the actual gap or black-mark stock.
How can I tell it is actually fixed?
Restart once and print a one-label test; the LED should settle to normal standby after the job.
Before buying a replacement part
Optional cutter and interface modules alter possible faults. Identify installed options.
