Why won't the RATO engine on my AGT LRT23 start?

Quick fix: For a LRT23 fitted with the RATO R740/RV740D family only, follow fuel supply, airflow and ignition checks in that order.

Start here — before replacing any parts

For a LRT23 fitted with the RATO R740/RV740D family only, follow fuel supply, airflow and ignition checks in that order.

Safety before troubleshooting: Park safely, lower the attachment, shut down and let systems cool. Hydraulic fluid can penetrate skin under pressure; never loosen pressurized lines.
Check that this is YOUR version

Check the installed engine nameplate. RATO R740D service procedures must not be applied to a Briggs-equipped LRT23.

Manual scope: RATO R740D only once engine nameplate confirmed

PART 1 · ACTIONABLE TEST

Do these checks in order

Follow the steps below and keep a record of what changes after each one. Stop when an actual cause is confirmed.

01

Confirm the engine label is RATO R740/RV740D; if it is Briggs, STOP and use the matching engine manual.

02

With machine parked safely and engine off, confirm correct fuel in the tank and inspect the external tank-cap vent and reachable fuel path for blockage or leakage.

03

Check the air filter for obstruction according to the RATO maintenance section. Do not open the carburetor while fuel is hot or use open flames near fuel.

04

If fuel and intake checks pass, a trained mechanic should perform the manufacturer’s spark test, carburetor/float inspection and compression test using the specified precautions.

If the problem is gone

Engine starts and idles normally after restoring a known fuel/air restriction: monitor warm restart behavior.

If the problem is still there

Engine still will not start after authorized fuel/spark checks: follow the RATO service chart for carburetor, valve/compression and ignition diagnosis rather than random part swaps.

PART 2 · CAUSE BY CAUSE

Which cause matches your result?

Use these more specific checks only when the earlier steps point to that possibility.

01There is not enough usable fuel

How to narrow it down

With the machine safely parked and engine cool, check fuel level and condition.

If confirmed, what to do

Add fuel of the correct type for the confirmed RATO engine.

02Fuel is not reaching the engine correctly

How to narrow it down

Check for a blocked tank-cap vent or obvious fuel restriction without opening hot components.

If confirmed, what to do

Have a trained technician restore the vent or clean the fuel system as the RATO manual prescribes.

03The spark plug or ignition system is faulty

How to narrow it down

A qualified mechanic can inspect plug condition and ignition components using the engine manual.

If confirmed, what to do

Clean or replace the correctly specified part only when the fault is confirmed.

04Engine compression is insufficient

How to narrow it down

After basic checks, a mechanic can run the specified engine compression tests.

If confirmed, what to do

Repair worn internal parts only after confirming the diagnosis.

PART 3 · CONFIRM THE REPAIR

How can I tell it is actually fixed?

Test both a cold start and a warm restart under safe idle conditions, noting stable speed and absence of leaks.

Before buying a replacement part

RATO spark plugs, fuel parts, and service tolerances must match the exact engine nameplate.
