Start here — before replacing any parts
Start by separating job/software interruption from a loose USB connection and a machine overheat or motion fault.
Confirm the actual RAY5 10W controller firmware and software connection method; generic GRBL codes may not be supported by every firmware.
Manual scope: Firmware and connection type must be captured
Do these checks in order
Follow the steps below and keep a record of what changes after each one. Stop when an actual cause is confirmed.
Record whether you are using USB, Wi-Fi or offline microSD; note any message in the LightBurn/LaserGRBL console before resetting it.
With laser power OFF, inspect the USB cable for strain, poor fit or excessive length. Use a short good data cable and avoid moving the plug during a job.
Test a simple small engraving file with settings matching the material, while observing the console. If one complex file fails but a simple file works, regenerate/optimize the G-code.
If it stops after warmup, inspect ventilation, fan airflow and external power connections with the unit cooled. Do not defeat temperature/fire protections.
If the problem is gone
A simpler file or secure USB connection completes repeatedly: the isolated job/connection issue is likely resolved.
If the problem is still there
The same stop happens via offline jobs too: investigate the machine’s power, temperature and controller states, not just the USB driver.
Which cause matches your result?
Use these more specific checks only when the earlier steps point to that possibility.
01USB connection unstable
Inspect connection fit, cable length and proximity to power wiring while powered off.
Reconnect securely and use a shorter shielded data cable routed away from motor wiring.
02Host software or operating system stalled
Check whether LightBurn, LaserGRBL or the host computer became unresponsive.
Restart the software/computer and review system power-management settings.
03G-code job file is problematic
Check whether the job regenerates cleanly and contains excessive nodes.
Simplify the design and regenerate the job file.
04Thermal protection may have activated
Stop the job and inspect visible fan operation and ventilation after power-off and cooldown.
Restore safe ventilation; stop using the unit and seek service if overheating continues.
How can I tell it is actually fixed?
Complete two supervised small jobs, watching for interruptions, power resets and excessive heat. Never leave the laser unattended.
Before buying a replacement part
Use the RAY5 10W’s exact laser module voltage and firmware version when evaluating power faults.
